Sampling, often regarded as the heartbeat of the fashion industry, is a meticulous process that bridges the gap between concept and creation. It's the phase where designs leap off the sketchpad and into reality, undergoing refinement and iteration until they're ready for production. Join us as we peel back the layers and take a closer look at what goes on behind the scenes in a typical day of sampling at MAES London.
Preparation and Planning
This begins early in sampling, so we can strategise and plan ahead. Firstly a handover meeting with the client is arranged in studio where our senior technical designer reviews the sketches, pattern blocks and tech packs for each sample, read our blog post on the importance of tech packs here and our 'in conversation with our senior technical designer', ensuring that all necessary materials and patterns are ready.
Fabric Cutting
With plans in place, the sampling process kicks into high gear as the cutters take centre stage. Armed with precision tools and years of expertise, they translate the designer's vision into tangible patterns, carefully laying out the fabric and cutting each piece with surgical precision. Every detail counts at this stage, as even the slightest deviation could impact the final fit and finish of the garment.
Sewing and Assembly
Now the focus shifts to the sewing and assembly phase. Skilled seamstresses and tailors take over, working to stitch together the fabric pieces and bring the sample to life. From delicate hand-sewn details to the whirring of sewing machines, the studio hums with activity as each garment takes shape, inching closer to completion with every stitch.
Fitting and Adjustment
With the samples nearing completion, it's time for the crucial fitting and adjustment stage. The design team carefully assesses the fit, drape, and overall aesthetic of each garment. Any necessary alterations are noted, from minor tweaks to major adjustments, ensuring that the final product meets the designer's exacting standards.
Evaluation and Reflection
As the sun sets on another day, the sampling studio team gathers for a final evaluation and reflection. Feedback is carefully considered, and any necessary revisions are incorporated into the next round of sampling if needed. Despite the countless challenges, there's a sense of satisfaction in knowing that each sample brings the vision one step closer to reality.
Sampling may be just one step in the journey from concept to creation, but it's undeniably one of the most critical. It's where ideas take shape, where creativity meets craftsmanship, and where dreams begin to materialise. Behind the seams of every garment lies a story of dedication, passion, and relentless pursuit of perfection. And as the sun rises on another day, the sampling studio's journey continues, one stitch at a time.
